The role of the Build Engineer (Continuous Integration Specialist) is to spearhead dramatic improvements in the build workflow of development, helping the development team to work as efficiently and with as much agility as possible.
To succeed in this role, you will need to be an expert in source control, able to explain and contrast different branching/merging models with ease, familiar with dependency management, and tools which provide help when dealing with multiple concurrent codelines. You will be will acquainted with traditional (centralised) VCS such as Subversion, as well as newer (distributed) VCS such as Git. You will be an expert in using and configuring continuous integration engines (such as Hudson or Cruise) to achieve fast and efficient builds, and be familiar with the concepts of build pipelining and promoting builds through it for rapid feedback to developers. You will have a passion and drive to improve the efficiency of development, so that they can in turn provide a quicker and more robust development effort. You will also have the confidence and ability to liaise with all levels of development including Technical Architects, developers and System Administrators.
Key Responsibilities
* Architect and Implement a continuous integration solution
* Work closely with developers to help integrate their work into the CI system
* Analyse process inefficiencies and provide solutions to overcoming them
* Help integrate automated testing effectively into CI
Experience/competence:
* Knowledge of Agile Methodologies
* Knowledge of online gaming, intranets and online financial systems
* Knowledge of CI engines (Hudson, Cruise, Anthill, Lunt)
* Knowledge of source control systems (Subversion, CVS, Git, Bitkeeper)
* Knowledge of branching strategies and how to merge effectively
* Knowledge of ANT, Maven
* Experience working with Java, Flex, Flash
* VMWare / Virtualisation / Cloud experience desirable
